Alice HUDSON

We are sad to report the death of Alice C. Hudson on November 6, 2024. She was seventy-seven years of age and a resident of Manhattan at the time of her death.
Alice was Chief of the Lionel Pincus and Princess Firyal Map Division from 1981 until her retirement in July 2009. She began her NYPL career in 1970 as a cataloger in the Map Division. She served as the Assistant Chief from 1977 until 1981. During her tenure, the Map Division doubled the size of its collection and featured maps created by women and those in which women had a significant role.
In 1977, Alice helped to establish the New York Map Society. In 2018, the Society established the Alice Hudson Award, which acknowledges achievements in geography and mapmaking by students at Hunter College. As an adjunct professor, Alice taught map librarianship at Pratt Institute. She was the recipient of the 2001 Sloan Public Service Award presented by the Fund for the City of New York.
A native of Tennessee, Alice attended Middle Tennessee University. A course in geography changed her career trajectory, and she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in geography. She received her master’s degree in Library Science from Vanderbilt Peabody College in Nashville.
Alice was a consultant and contributor to The Historical Atlas of New York City, published in 1994. She authored numerous articles and reviews in publications such as American Book Collector, Cartographer, and Meridian. In 2001, Alice’s book, Heading West/Touring West: Mapmakers, Performing Artists, and the American Frontier told the story of the country’s westward march through the eyes of mapmakers and performers who brought entertainment and information to the newly mapped territories.
