Elnora JACKSON
Elnora Jackson died in New York on April 18, 2025. Elnora was ninety-nine years of age at the time of her death. A Virginia native, Elnora grew up in Roanoke and graduated from Morgan State College in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Her work as a book binder in the Morgan State library helped to inspire her future career. She relocated to Queens, New York, and began at NYPL in 1954. She received a Master of Library Science degree from Pratt Institute the following year. Elnora worked in several East Bronx branches, including Clason’s Point, before her appointment as Branch Librarian at the Soundview Branch. She remained in that position until her retirement on January 20,
1987.
Elnora was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for seventy-nine years. Upon her arrival in New York, she joined the Queens Alumnae Chapter for which she played many roles. She was married to Nereus Jackson for fifty-one years until his death in 2003. Together, they travelled extensively and enjoyed theater, music, and African art. Elnora worked quietly and actively on numerous issues. As a member of the St. Albans Congregational Church, she served in the Food Pantry and Host Club Ministries. She encouraged community participation in the 2020 census. In retirement, Elnora continued to maintain her lifelong strong commitment to her sorority, education, community, and church.
