Edith OSTROWSKY
Edith Ostrowsky died on January 13, 2025. Edie was recovering in a rehab center after an accident at home when she became ill. She was a resident of Schroon Lake, NY, at the time of her death.
A native of the Bronx, Edie was a regular patron at several branches including Fordham, High Bridge, and Grand Concourse. While pursuing her undergraduate degree at The City College of New York, Edie began her NYPL career in 1962 as a part-time clerk at the Fort Washington branch. She subsequently worked at IBL/Union Catalog, located in the Donnell Library Center, then at Mid-Manhattan. She served as Senior and Supervising Clerk at Mid-Manhattan Circ Op. After completing a Master’s in Library Science at Pratt Institute, she held several librarian positions in Mid-Manhattan General Reference, Room 315, and the Map Division. She then assumed positions of increasing responsibility in the Mid-Manhattan History and Social Sciences Department where she was Head Librarian at the time of her retirement in August 2004.
Edie is remembered for her strong commitment to excellence in public service. She was a tireless fighter for workers’ rights during the formation of Local 1930 at NYPL. In retirement, she became well known for her art. She frequently exhibited at the Ticonderoga Arts Gallery where she also served as a board member.
