Virginia SWIFT

We have recently learned of the death of Virginia L. Swift. Virginia was 100 years of age and a resident of Brooklyn, New York, at the time of her death on November 9, 2024.

A lifelong Brooklyn resident, Virginia was educated locally at St. Amselm’s School and Fontbonne Hall Academy. A graduate of St. Joseph’s College, Virginia received a Master of Science in Library Service from Columbia University in 1948.

Virginia began her long NYPL career that same year. She was a children’s librarian and
held positions as assistant branch librarian, branch librarian, and regional librarian in
various branches in Manhattan, including the 115th and 125th Street branches. She also worked at Mott Haven in the Bronx. She is best remembered as the Principal, then Regional, Librarian for the Lower East Side Region at the Chatham Square Regional Branch. She held that position until her retirement in 1995.

Virginia was known for her strength, dedication, and commitment to public service. In her retirement, she continued to be a world traveler, theater- and museum-goer, and voracious reader—she loved a good murder mystery! Friends and colleagues recall her positive and upbeat attitude and her frequent advice to “do it now.” She remained a lifelong parishioner of St. Anselm R.C. Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Donations to The New York Public Library in Virginia’s name would best honor and preserve her memory.
