Virginia R. WARNER
Virginia Warner of Staten Island passed away at the age of 85 on April 11, 2014. She had worked for NYPL from 1959 until retiring in 1991. She worked at several branches on Staten Island, and also at Mid-Manhattan. She later worked with the Development Office and the Friends Office, where she stayed until her retirement. Known for her optimism, friendly nature and good sense of humor, Virginia enjoyed sharing her recollections of the good old days working for the Library. She recalled working in the tiny branches of Huguenot Park and Prince's Bay where there were no restrooms and staff had to use the facilities at a nearby church and gas station respectively. Another old memory that gave her a chuckle was when a young person arrived at the library on horseback and the horse attempted to follow the girl inside but got stuck in the doorway.
Virginia was the founder of the "Lunch Bunch", a group of Staten Island NYPL retirees, which met once a month at various restaurants for a number of years. She welcomed each new retiree into the group.
According to her obituary in the Staten Island Advance, Virginia had many interests. She enjoyed reading, square dancing, camping, knitting, bowling and bird watching. She was a volunteer in many organizations. She helped to form East Short Little League, where she later volunteered as a coach.
