Ismael ALICEA
As many of you know, Ismael Alicea died at his residence in Rockland County, NY, on April 13, 2015. He was 60 years old at the time of his death. He retired in 2009 after a 37 year career at NYPL. He was a Retirees Association member and was interviewed in 2012 for the Association's Oral History Project.
Ismael was born in Puerto Rico. He received his undergraduate degree from John Jay College and completed his Master of Library Science degree at Pratt Institute in 1982. Ismael joined the Library in 1972 as a page at the Donnell Library Center. He held a variety of LTA, Community Liaison, and Information Assistant positions at several locations, including the Donnell Foreign Languages Library and the South Bronx Project. He served as the Community Outreach Specialist for the Bronx and became the Coordinator of Outreach Services in 1998. At his retirement, Ismael was the Associate Director for Adult Education and Outreach.
Ismael is warmly remembered as an exceptionally talented librarian, administrator, and mentor who leaves a legacy of service and commitment to the profession he loved. In October 2009, he was honored by the Northeast Chapter of REFORMA, an affiliate organization of the American Library Association. He received the Pura Belpré Librarian of the Year Award in recognition of his numerous career achievements, which resulted in improved library and information services to the Latino and Spanish speaking community.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Ismael enjoyed the outdoors as an active fisherman and hiker. He is survived by his wife, Susan Alicea, a librarian for the New York City Department of Education, and a large family.
