Herman Steven BEKEMEYER of Winter Garden, Florida, died on Aug. 15, 2016 at age 85.
From the late 1960s to 1986, Steve was an NYPL music reference librarian and cataloger, working at the Library and Museum of the Performing Arts (Circulating Collections and Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound) and in the NYPL Branch Libraries' Cataloging Office, where he cataloged music and dance books and scores.
Prior to his NYPL career, Steve taught in Florida high schools in Leesburg, Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando, and at Appalachian State U. in Boone, NC. Many of his former students kept in touch with him for years.
Steve was a graduate of Florida State U. where he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music education, and of U. of N. Carolina, where he earned a Master's degree in library science and completed coursework toward a PhD in music. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1954 through 1955 with an honorable discharge.
Among his survivors are brothers Bert and H. Lee in Florida; niece, caregiver and best friend Kristin, also in Florida; and beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
