Lenore COWAN
Lenore Cowan, 95, died October 23, 2023, in Palm Coast, Florida. She was born in Bozeman,
Montana, to Evelyn and Sherman Johnson and grew up with her siblings in Arlington, Virginia.
She met her husband of 55 years, William (Bill) Cowan, while attending American University.
Lenore completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree
from Columbia University.
Lenore and Bill spent many years in New York, first in Manhattan, then on their sailboat, Pipkin,
at the World’s Fair Marina. Lenore was the director of the picture collection of the New York
Public Library for several years. Upon her retirement in 1983, she and Bill sailed their boat to
Florida. After Bill’s death, Lenore moved to Riviera Senior Living in Daytona Beach.
Lenore was a friend to all and loved to participate in all the activities her various communities
had to offer. She belonged to the Palatka Yacht Club, the Woman’s Club of Palatka, a breast
cancer survivor support group, and the American Cancer Society Putnam Unit. Upon moving to
Riviera Senior Living, she became the unofficial librarian and served on the resident council as
secretary/treasurer for many years.
Lenore is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her two siblings, Paul Johnson and
Katherine Nelson.
