Norma HERZ
Norma B. Herz died on March 30, 2020. She was 91 years of age and a resident of Rosebank on Staten Island at the time of her death. A native of Brooklyn, Norma grew up in Rockville Center, NY. After graduating magna cum laude from Adelphi University, Norma earned a master’s degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute. She began her twenty-five year NYPL career in 1967, working primarily in Staten Island branches. During the 1970s, Norma’s years at the Stapleton Branch deepened her understanding of how a library could help its community. She worked tirelessly for children and families, sharing stories and preparing imaginative exhibits and programs. She frequently walked through Stapleton’s streets distributing flyers and inviting people to visit the branch. Norma reached out to Pete Seeger during his tour of waterfront communities and invited him to visit the library. He returned to do a program and became a lifelong friend to Norma. Norma’s personal interests were wide-ranging and deeply felt. She was a serious reader of poetry, religion, and the work of those devoted to social justice and human rights. She enjoyed classical music and Italian Renaissance art. She was also a supporter of numerous Staten Island cultural and social service organizations.
Norma is survived by her sister Nancy Beers Mills Andromidas. and her family, as well as by Margaret Benjamin, her devoted friend of many years.
