Marjorie MIR

Marjorie Mir died on July 26, 2025. She was ninety-one and a resident of Bronxville, New York, at the time of her death. A native of Flushing, NY, Marjorie discovered libraries and a love of reading at an early age. While pursuing a Master of Library Service degree from Columbia University, Marjorie joined NYPL as a Librarian Trainee in 1956. Beginning at the West Farms Branch, Marjorie worked as a children’s librarian at several Bronx and Manhattan branches, including Westchester Square, Francis Martin, and 96th Street. In 1970, Marjorie relocated to Hawaii where she continued her career as a Children’s Librarian. After her return to New York, Marjorie joined the New Rochelle Public Library before her return to NYPL in 1979 at the Fort Washington Branch. She was later appointed senior children’s librarian at the Kingsbridge Branch, a position she held until her retirement in 1991. Marjorie developed a lifetime love of poetry. An accomplished poet herself, Marjorie’s work appeared most often in the Atlanta Review and the online journal Eclectica. She served as poetry editor for the newsletter, Mohegan Commons, and edited an anthology of poems from that site. Marjorie contributed stories and poetry to the Film Library Quarterly, a publication of the Donnell Film Library. Her poetry has also appeared in the NYPLRA  newsletter. In retirement, she continued her NYPL career as a volunteer book discussion leader at the Riverdale Branch. Marjorie will be remembered for her lifelong dedication to children, reading, and poetry, as well as for her everyday collegiality and humor.
