Jean PETERSON
We are sad to report the death of retiree Jean De Rubini Peterson on December 28, 2017.
During her career at NYPL, Jean served as Branch Librarian of the Hamilton Grange Branch as well as Librarian of the Education Collection at Mid-Manhattan. She remained at Mid-Manhattan until her retirement on July 31, 2009.
Jean was active in Local 1930 of DC37, holding the positions of shop steward, trustee, and secretary. She served as 1930’s delegate to DC 37’s Delegate Assembly and attended conventions of AFSCME and the Coalition of Labor Union Women. She was a member of the Committee for Real Change which worked against corruption in DC 37. As a campaigner for social justice, Jean marched with Local 1930 in demonstrations against the Vietnam war and in favor of the ERA.
Jean was a diehard New York sports fan. She followed the Giants, Rangers, and Knicks and had a passion for the NY Yankees. She followed many games on TV dressed in a Yankees shirt, jacket, hat, and a pin from her extensive collection. At social occasions, Jean never missed a chance to get on the dance floor.
Jean’s niece Rachel has informed us that there will be a memorial service for Jean on Saturday, February 3 , 2018, at noon, at Our Saviour’s Atonement Lutheran Church at 178 Bennett Avenue, New York, NY 10040.
