Walter TSANG
Walter Tsang retired in May 1997 from the Serial Cataloging Section. He passed away on November 18, 2020.
Walter attended school and college in Hong Kong, where he was introduced to Christianity by an older sister. He came to the U.S. to further his education. Walter originally wanted to be a teacher in Hong Kong, but because of the situation there, he decided remain in the U.S. Here he earned a Master of Divinity from New Brunswick Theological Seminary; a Master of Arts from NYU; and, while working at NYPL, a Master of Library Science from Pratt Institute. Walter met his late wife Joyce at church. They had two children, Felicia and Gregory. He worked in Preparation Services of the Research Library for nearly 30 years. His last job was as a cataloguer in the Serial Cataloging Section. When Walter was not working at NYPL, he volunteered as associate pastor at the Chinese United Methodist Church in Chinatown. He gave time and money to his church. He had a great love for the Christian ideals and faith. After Walter retired, he continued to do many things. He volunteered as a school principal and acting pastor. He learned how to play the piano and to use a Chinese typewriter. He also studied The I Ching, or Book of Changes. He travelled the globe, visiting Mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Denmark, Finland, and various other destinations. With his family, Walter would go to see Scott Hamilton, Kristy Yamaguchi, and other figure skating stars. He went to Madison Square Garden to see the ice skating exhibitions. Walter would be joined by his friends from NYPL, Louis and Elly Becker, Erminio and Ros D'onofrio and Joe Zeveloff. Walter was always very friendly and eager to answer questions if someone needed help. Walter had a good sense of humor and was fun to be with.
