Leonard VIGGIANO
Leonard Viggiano died on March 27, 2026. Leonard was eighty-eight years old and a resident of Westchester County at the time of his death.
A New York native, Leonard was born in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. After attending Mount Saint Michael Academy, as well as the Marist Academy, Leonard began his NYPL career in 1960. While serving in clerical positions at Melcourt, Bronx Bookmobile, and Woodstock, he completed his Bachelor’s degree at Fordham University. He began work on a Master’s of Library Science degree at Pratt Institute and became a librarian trainee at Hunt’s Point in 1964. He became a librarian at Melcourt and Westchester Square and a senior librarian at Wakefield. In 1971, after a year as acting supervising branch librarian at Grand Concourse, Leonard was appointed branch librarian at Throg’s Neck. He began as principal librarian at Kingsbridge in 1980, then regional librarian in 1983, a position he held until his retirement in 1993.
Leonard continued to be active in the library field during his retirement. He assumed the position of head of the Circulation Department in the library of Montclair State University. After five years, he moved on to become director of the Maryknoll Seminary Library. In 2000, he and his wife Ellen, also a librarian whom he met while both worked for NYPL, relocated to North Carolina. While there, they shared a part time evening job in the local community college library. Leonard and Ellen returned to Westchester County in 2012.
Leonard is survived by his wife Ellen, two sons, and two grandchildren.
