Joe YRANSKI
Joseph M. Yranski died on October 31, 2024, at the age of seventy-two. He was a resident of New York City at the time of his death.
A native of Fairfield, Connecticut, Joe relocated to New York City in 1973. He attended Wagner College and Fordham University. A part-time position in the Bank Street College of Education library led him to pursue a Master of Science in Library Service at Columbia University.
Joe began what would be a thirty-year NYPL career at the Jefferson Market branch. He served in various positions in Manhattan and the Bronx. He became the Senior Film/Video Historian at the Donnell Library Center and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. He held that position until his retirement in January 2009.
Joe enthusiastically studied the early history of motion pictures. He often shared his expertise in locating and preserving silent and classic films long considered lost. He worked with the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the Mary Pickford Foundation, and the Library of Congress. He served as silent film adviser at the Film Forum in New York and was on the board of several organizations, including Cinecon and the New York Film/Video Council.
