Burt ABELSON

Burton Morris Abelson died peacefully on November 29, 2021, four days shy of his eighty-fifth birthday. At the time of his death, he was a resident of the Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Brooklyn. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Burt made his home in Brooklyn for many years.
 
After receiving his Master’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College, Burt was a librarian in Worcester, Massachusetts, for a short time. After relocating to New York, he began his career at NYPL in 1962 at the Francis Martin branch in the Bronx. Throughout his nearly forty-year career, Burt served as a reference librarian in positions of increasing authority at a number of locations. These included Westchester Square, Tompkins Square, Bronx Reference at the Fordham Library Center, Donnell Library Center, and Jefferson Market. While in charge of Bronx Reference, Burt worked closely with the Bronx County Historical Society to maintain a Bronx archival collection at Fordham. Throughout his tenure at Donnell and Jefferson Market, Burt was a valued member of the Best of Reference team that was famous for humorous and witty presentations of new reference sources of the year. He retired in the early 2000s.
 
Burt remained a devoted and active member of the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Manhattan’s theater district. Burton Morris Abelson died peacefully on November 29, 2021, four days shy of his eighty-fifth birthday. At the time of his death, he was a resident of the Menorah Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Brooklyn. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Burt made his home in Brooklyn for many years.
 
There will be a memorial service in Burt’s honor on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 10:00 am at St Mary’s, 145 West 46th Street, New York, NY, 10036. Condolences may be sent to his niece, Alexa Beauvaus, 1285 Doe Valley Road, Athol, MA 01331. Donations in Burt’s memory may be made to St. Mary the Virgin or online to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
